Chris Jones

Chris is an engaging speaker with a passion for Art and an eagerness to share his understanding with others.

Art and its appreciation should be inclusive. Too often it is presented in terms which are impenetrable and confusing. The aim of these talks is not only to provide some plain English explanations of the terminology used in the Art world, but also to help people to LOOK at a painting rather than just SEE it. One small step in making Art Appreciation accessible to all.

  • Art Appreciation for the Beginner

    • Art Appreciation simply means being able to look at works and form your own opinions. Do you like every piece of music you hear, every book you read or every kind of food you taste? This talk breaks down some of the “ingredients” in a work of Art in order to help people to look at art in a different way.

  • An Introduction to Art History

    • What is Art? When did Art begin? Where is Art now? A very condensed History of the major Art styles and movements in human existence from 40,000 years ago to present day.

  • Symbology in Art (1 of 2)

    • Nothing in Byzantine, Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelite painting is there by accident. Positioning of figures, gestures, objects, even colours have special meaning. This introduction explains some of the common and more readily understandable symbolism used in painting and shows examples of works which use them. You will never look at a painting the same way again.

  • Symbology in Art (2 of 2)

    • This presentation goes into some detail about the background and circumstances which led to the commissioning and execution of a few key works with very significant Symbolic meanings. Works used are by Holbien, Titian and Van Eyck.

  • Art Movements

    • Art Movements are the collective titles that are given to artworks which share the same artistic ideas, style, technical approach or time frame. They are a historical convenience for grouping together artists of a common period, style or technique so that they may be more easily understood.

  • Decoding Da Vinci

    • What do we actually know about arguably the most famous painter in History? Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code created some intrigue about his works, but what are the facts behind the fiction? This presentation takes a peek into the some surprising aspects of the man and his work.

  • Destination Specific Art Talk

    • These focus on the Art Galleries and museums in the Cruise ports of call. Each one will identify a few key Galleries and Museums and the “must see” works available, which will ensure that you get the most out of your short time in the port.
